The Hon. Michael Chan Offers Congratulations at Evening Event

December 12, 2008

Tonight there was a celebratory feeling in the air as a large crowd gathered at the Vedic Cultural Centre for an evening of performance and news of a significant grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

The Honourable Michael Chan, MPP for Markham-Unionville, made the formal announcement that the Centre received a $150,000 grant in June that is being used for renovations and upgrades for its building.

Mr. Chan was joined in offering congratulations to the Centre’s Chairman, Amar Erry, and Vice-Chair, Anand Rupnarain, and the President, Amar Aumadas, by Vijay Lekhi, a volunteer with the Foundation, John McCallum, MP for Markham-Unionville and the Mayor of Markham, Frank Scarpitti.

“I am delighted that the Vedic Cultural Centre has received such a significant grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation,” said Michael Chan, M.P.P., Markham-Unionville. “As one of the most vibrant and active communities here in Markham, they are very deserving of these funds which are needed to preserve this important part of Ontario’s cultural make-up.”

There is going to be a lot of activity going on at the Centre, which is continuing to offer a wide range of programs and services. Funds from the grant are being used to help make the building more accessible and to upgrade technical equipment so that the Centre will be able to meet the needs for the many events and festivals that take place there each year.

The Vedic Cultural Centre has been working actively in the community since 1978 and offers arts and cultural programs for people of all ages. For more information on the Centre, please go to the website at: or call: 905-475-5778.
